The reunion of His Grace Geevarghese Mar Ivanios, Metropolitan of Bethany with the Catholic Church on 20th September 1930 was a historical event in the Universal Catholic Church, which inspired many of the Malankarites to reunite with the Catholic Church.  The Malankara Catholic Church steadily grew and spread throughout South India in a short span of time.

Syro Malankara Hierarchy was established through the Apostolic Constitution ‘Christo Pastorum Principi’ of 11th June 1932 promulgated by Pope Pius XI.  The Metropolitan Eparchy of Trivandrum was inaugurated on 11th May 1933 and His Grace Mar Ivanios was enthroned as its first Metropolitan-Archbishop.

Archbishop Mar Ivanios established his Head Quarters at Pattom, Trivandrum.  He decided to have an Ashram, a Covent and a Mission Centre very near to his residence.  Hence he purchased land at two sides of the Main road in Nalanchira, two kilometers north of Pattom.  Bethany Ashram and Bethany Convent were established in two sides of the Main Road.  Between the Bethany Ashram and Bethany Convent a thatched chapel was constructed.  This was the first place of worship for the members of Nalanchira Mission.  A shrine dedicated to St. Antony was also constructed nearby.

Nearness to the Head quarters of the Malankara Catholic Church and the care, love  and support extended by the members of  Bethany Ashram and Bethany Convent helped the Nalanchira Mission to achieve steady growth. Several inhabitants of  Nalanchira embraced the church and lot of Malankarites from North and South came to this place and settled down here.

Satellite Mission Centres were established at Kuravankonam, Parottukonam, Powdikonam, Kattuvila, Kusavarkal etc.

In 1940, the place of worship of Nalanchira Mission was shifted to Parottukonam - in a tiled, partly constructed building.  By 1950, construction of a Chapel for the Bethany Ashram was completed and the parishioners were permitted to use this chapel for their worship.  This chapel was dedicated to  St. Benedict and hence the parish was also named St. Benedict’s Parish. For more than three decades, this chapel was used by the parishioners as their church.

The long cherished dream of the Parishioners to have their own church became a reality on the blessing of the present church on 3rd July 1984, by His Grace Benedict Mar Gregorios, the then Archbishop of Trivandrum.  This church is dedicated to St. Thomas, the Apostle of India and the name of the parish is also changed as St. Thomas Malankara Catholic Parish.

The Vicar and office bearers of the Parish from time to time are taking all efforts to strengthen the fellowship of the Parishioners and have a peaceful and mutually helpful existence.
